As our family navigates today's fast pace environment, we recognize that like many people - we are on information overload. It is important that we are first and foremost critical thinkers. As Dan Kurkland outlines, it is "Fact v. Interpretation." to " recognize not only what a text says, but also how that text portrays the subject matter". For more, visit www.criticalreading.com.
The author, advocate, teacher, civil rights leader is thought provoking, eloquent, a master of words, passionate, and truly honest. He makes me think so hard it hurts. Start with a couple of his essays --- I was required to read for English Composition but I kept digging.
Do not stop there - keep digging and turn over the next stone.
1. Always have a primary source. If you don't know what that is - look it up.
2. Always have a secondary source to back up your primary source.
For NEWS, we would like to thank Professor Block [Moorpark College] for sharing these resources:
From one momma to another: why community college might be the perfect first step.
As a returning student, I (Momma) want to share my top 10 reasons why parents should encourage their children to consider starting at a community college.
Disclaimer: Do your own research—every person is different. What works for one student may not work for another. These are my personal reflections, and they may evolve over time. That’s one of the beautiful parts of being human.
1. Academic Flexibility
As someone who still isn’t sure what I “want to be,” I’ve learned that’s not the right question to ask a child—or anyone. Instead, let’s ask: What interests you? While earning a living is important, chasing a paycheck at the expense of personal fulfillment and well-being doesn’t add up. I don’t want my daughter to feel pressured to have it all figured out at 17. Community college gives her time and space to explore.
2. Top-Notch Education
This is purely my opinion, but I am receiving a fantastic education. I’m learning in every class—even the ones I didn’t think I’d enjoy. (And yes, Moorpark has great rankings too—feel free to look those up!)
3. Small-Town Feeling
Moorpark College feels like a small, close-knit community. People genuinely want you to succeed. It’s a great transition out of high school and into young adulthood.
4. Free Tutoring
The tutoring services are free, well-run, and open to all students. I’ve used them—and they make a difference.
5. Accessible Professors
Piggybacking on #2—our professors are accessible, responsive, and helpful. I’ve emailed mine and received thoughtful responses quickly. That connection matters.
6. Diverse Programs
Moorpark offers a wide range of programs—from Animal Science and Performing Arts to Biotech, Nursing, Sports, and more. It’s a great place to explore different paths and passions.
7. No Social Pressure
The social stress of high school? Gone. There’s no pressure to join a sorority or “fit in” with the right crowd. Students here focus on growing, not impressing.
8. Cost-Effective
At just $46 per unit (as of now), it’s a financial no-brainer. We’ll be doing a cost comparison for our daughter—and maybe the money saved can fund a travel adventure or help with her future transfer.
9. Placement Tests
No expensive, high-stakes SAT or ACT pressure here. The placement process is more student-friendly and less stressful.
10. Honors Program
Yes, community colleges have honors programs too! Moorpark supports leadership, community involvement, and smooth transfer pathways to four-year universities.
